NORTH Yorkshire’s Simon Dyson opened his 2009 European Golf Tour campaign with a steady start to the first round of the Abu Dhabi Championship in the United Arab Emirates.
The 31-year-old Dyson carded a respectable one-under-par 71 to trail joint opening day leaders – Swedes Johan Edfors and Mikael Lundberg – by five shots.
The round did not start well for Malton and Norton GC’s Dyson who dropped a shot on the fifth. He countered with successive birdies on seven and eight to be one under at the turn.
However, the inward nine was not as prosperous. Birdies gained on the tenth and 17th holes were wiped out by bogey shots on the 11th and 16th.
