ROUND three of the Acomb Tackle York and District Winter League proved to be a match of two halves.

The whole of the unfortunate section pegged at Poppleton drew a total blank.

Those who found themselves below the city fared somewhat better, but the going was still pretty tough with bites at a premium in the icy waters of the Ouse.

It was the Bridgefield at Bishopthorpe that dominated proceedings, with Trevor Price taking the lead from peg 86.

Price’s winning bag of 6lb 7oz consisted of six skimmers and a few small roach taken on ground bait feeder alternating worm and maggot.

It was a good job for his Tang Hall Match Group team-mates that he did amass such a haul as the other five contributed a total of 6oz to the overall tally.

Their six-man total was enough to take the honours, with York Tackle in second on 6lb 6oz and Cochranes third with 6lb 1oz.

Brian Richardson took second individual place for Cochranes from a peg on the Palace Ings bend where he netted eight roach on a caster feeder for his 3lb 5oz.

The rest were closely bunched behind, with Craig Robinson helping the York Tackle cause from next peg to the winner to the tune of 3lb 4oz.

Mick Doyle, of Sensas Wibsey, was fourth with his roach and skimmer net of 3lb 3oz.

Meanwhile, the opening match in the Mosella Selby Winter League was reduced to four hours to allow anglers time to clear ice up to two inches thick on the Selby Canal at Brayton.

However, tiny roach, rudd and skimmers could be tempted even under the harsh conditions.

Mosella Selby’s Steve Addy managed to keep himself fully occupied at peg 22, where pinkie over groundbait and a delicate touch brought him 160 fish and a 4lb 3oz winning total.

Second place was claimed by Pete Riley and helped his Tri-Cast side to a team victory.

Drawn at peg 19, Riley used punch at eight metres for a 3lb 9oz net made up of 130 roach and skimmers.

Result: 1 Steve Addy, Mosella Selby, 4-3-0; 2 Pete Riley, Tri-Cast, 3-9-0; 3 Tony Tarff, Daiwa Dons, 3-5-8; 4 Andy Geldart, Garbolino Ossett, 3-3-0; 5 Phil Iveson, Cheshire Angling, 2-13-0; 6 Richard Pulford, Hull DAA, 2-8-0.
