THE Riverside Financial Services event on the Ouse above York was no match for the fainthearted in freezing conditions.

However, the river’s roach and dace provided plenty of bites for most and some hot competition for the minor places.

In an otherwise tight frame, Dave Pollitt won at a canter from peg 58 at Widdington where the long rod and maggot brought more than 80 silver fish.

This put the result beyond doubt, but a couple of small chub in the dying stages saw him cement the win with an 11lb 12oz total.

The scramble for second was won by Paul Bennett at peg 45, where the long rod and maggot again brought 6lb 12oz made up of 50 roach and dace.

Result: 1 Dave Pollitt, Hirst Tackle, 11-12-0; 2 Paul Bennett, Sensas Wibsey, 6-12-0; 3 John Dunhill, Maver Barnsley, 6-9-0; 4 Arthur Benstead, Pontefract, 6-6-0; 5 Eddie Bridon, Maver, 6-4-0; 6 Ian Bowman, Maver Barnsley, 6-1-0.

* A rapid overnight thaw and a bit of ice breaking put the lakes at Langwith back in commission again on Sunday and John Kenning put together a healthy 41lb 8oz to earn the plaudits. Using maggot across to the island at Anya’s peg 11, Kenning took carp to 2lb steadily through to the whistle.

Just a couple of fish behind was teenage dynamo Chris Reilly, who fished the same way at peg 25 on Anya’s Lake for 38lb 10oz.

Andy Marritt tidied up the top three with 35lb 4oz from peg four on Bethany’s.

Result: 1 John Kenning, Garbolino Ossett, 41-8-0; 2 Chris Reilly, Discount Tackle, 38-10-0; 3 Andy Marritt, North Frodingham, 35-4-0; 4 Steph Armitage, Team Glum, 28-4-0; 5 Nick Butler, Langwith, 23-4-0; 6 Steve Hawkes, Eccleshill, 22-14-0.
