ALL FOOTBALL clubs thrive on the passion of their supporters. York City is no different. So it’s great that fans are enthusiastic about their team. There can sometimes be a fine line between enthusiasm and misbehaviour, however. The FA has seen fit to slap the club over the wrist because of the behaviour of a minority of fans in the match at Woking last month.
A flare was thrown onto the pitch. Nine York fans were ejected from the ground and another 30 or so chose to leave voluntarily, the FA says.
The club’s community director, Sophie Hicks, has warned the Minstermen could face a points deduction if the fans responsible continue to misbehave.
That is the last thing Colin Walker’s men need.
Worse even than that, such behaviour brings shame on York.
We say to these fans: be enthusiastic, yes. But don’t act like yobs.
