Operation Drystone – the police crackdown on criminals across North Yorkshire – reached the coast this week with a series of police raids across Scarborough.

The hard-hitting crime-crackdown was launched in York last week by Chief Constable Grahame Maxwell, targeting individuals who bring misery to local communities.

Nine properties were searched across Scarborough over two days and nine people arrested on suspicion of a variety of offences including assault, cultivation and production of cannabis, possession of illegal drugs and burglary. Property seized included 21 cannabis plants, 28 cannabis wraps, cannabis resin, amphetamine, imitation firearms, suspected stolen tobacco and cigarettes and a quantity of cash. Chief Supt Javad Ali, commander for the eastern area which includes the Scarborough district, said: “Drystone is sending out a clear message to the criminal community that their actions won’t be tolerated. “North Yorkshire has seen a year on year reduction in crime over the past few years and we want to ensure that trend continues.

“Criminals have no place in our society and we intend to divert the fear of crime back to them – where it belongs.

“We are committed to ensuring that the eastern area of the county remains one of the safest places to live and work and our residents enjoy a safe and secure environment.”

As part of the operation, leaflets and posters offering crime prevention advice and contact numbers were distributed to local residents.

Operation Drystone will continue across the county with more planned activity targeting those who bring criminality and fear to our neighbourhoods. If anyone has any information about any suspected criminal activity, phone North Yorkshire Police on 0845 60 60 247 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
