Members of Only Men Aloud, who won BBC show Last Choir Standing and have since signed a multi-million pound record deal, arrived in Malton on the latest leg of their promotional tour yesterday when they needed to spend a penny.

Mary Newton, of Langley Drive – where the group, who release their debut album this month, then performed – came to their rescue by letting them use her loo, before playing them a tune on her ancient hammer dulcimer folk instrument.

She said: “They were lovely lads.”
