A CRACKING quartet of tries by Jordan Potter propelled Heworth ARLC Under-14s into round four of the BARLA Yorkshire Junior Cup.

The rampant Villagers were 36-0 victors over visitors Dewsbury Celtic in the third round tie at Elmpark Way.

The opening exchanges were even, with both teams demonstrating good defence and attacking skills, with Dewsbury going close to scoring.

Heworth broke the deadlock with Potter’s opening try, while the scorer played his part in keeping Celtic out. He was backed by Josh Poulter and Elliot Bulmer, who shared the man of the match award for their massive contributions in defence and attack.

Wingers Tom Sturdy and Ben Barker impressed for the hosts, and substitute Peter Clarke made good yards.

Poulter got a deserved try as he dived over in the corner, and Harry Deighton created panic in the Dewsbury defence as three chip kicks led to three tries, while he also kicked four conversions.

Centre Jack Stewart was always a danger and he scored two spectacular tries in the second half.

David Hayes surged forward from dummy half and full-back Alex Clough snuffed out any danger when Dewsbury threatened the Heworth line.

Heworth U13s maintained their unbeaten run with a dramatic 28-26 victory at Oulton Vikings. The lead changed hands seven times before Heworth clinched victory in the final minute.

Oulton scored with the opening move of the game, but Heworth replied with prop Dave Larkin storming over under the sticks. Nathan Hammerton converted.

A brace of tries by Richard Ashton, separated by two Oulton scores, extended the Villagers’ lead to 16-12. Heworth centre Lewis Holmes sped in for a try, but Oulton closed the gap to two points at the break.

Oulton opened the second-half scoring, but Heworth hit back through hooker Jack Rowson, who collected the ball from dummy half and forced his way over from close in.

The hosts scored again to lead with 90 seconds to go but Holmes showed electrifying pace to beat two defenders on the outside before diving in at the corner.

Front-rowers Ashton, Rowson and Larkin were named joint men of the match, while Holmes topped the tackle count.

The coaches’ player award went to Sam Brown, who starred in his first match.

Heworth U18s were beaten 32-0 at Doncaster Toll Bar. The Villagers trailed 24-0 at half-time, despite some good defensive work by full-back Dan Craig and centre Tom Hirst.

Heworth’s top performers were hooker Jack Carling, prop Josh Bolam and centre Joe Hudson.
