HALLOWEEN Gala aces from New Earswick Swimming Club well and truly spooked the opposition at Beverley Leisure Centre.

The York club took a squad of 22 swimmers to the South Axholme Sharks Halloween Gala and won a clutch of gold, silver and bronze medals.

New Earswick got off to a superb start with Amy Taylor taking gold in the girls 13 yrs 100 metres individual medley.

Darrianne Helstrip followed up by taking gold in the girls 13 yrs 50m backstroke.

There were also gold medals for Gemma Oliver (15 yrs 50m backstroke), Jessica Oliver (13/14 yrs 50m breaststroke), Josh King (13/14 yrs 50m backstroke), Lewis Fairburn (11/12 yrs 50m butterfly), Daniel Hynes (11/12 yrs 50m breaststoke) and Tom Reed (10 yrs 50m breast and 50m butterfly).

The silver medallists were: Yvette Shaw (15 yrs 50m butterfly), Katie Buchanan (10 yrs 50m freestyle), Lance Talmadge (15 yrs 50m backstroke), Kristian Newby (15 yrs 50m breaststroke), Jack Taylor (13/14 yrs 50m freestyle), Daniel Hynes (11/12 yrs 50m backstroke) and Tom Reed (10 yrs 50m freestyle).

Bronze medal winners were: Katie Procter (13/14 yrs 50m buttterfly), Georgia Taylor (11/12 yrs 50m butterfly), Lance Talmadge (15 yrs 50m freestyle) and Josh King (13/14 yrs 50m butterfly).

In the mixed cannon, regarded as the blue ribband event of the meet, New Earswick fielded a team of two boys and two girls from each age group swimming as a relay team.

The club achieved 20 top six finishes, 15 personal best times and ten speeding tickets.

The club’s individual successes almost earned the overall team award, but they were overhauled by Rotherham Metro.

The morning session team included Amy Taylor, Yvette Shaw, Sophie Oliver, Darrianne Helstrip, Daniel Hynes, Lewis Fairburn, Tom Reed and Peter Wright.

New Earswick took first place after a titanic battle with Spenborough SC and Brighouse SC.

The afternoon team of Dan Richards, Lance Talmadge, Louis Fligg, Jack Taylor, Victoria Kleanthous, Georgia Taylor, Erin Leary and Katie Buchanan were second, losing out to hosts South Axholme Sharks.

Reed, the youngest of the Earswick swimmers, had an excellent day and was rewarded with the 10 yrs top boy award with a total of 17 points.

In the boys’ 11/12 ys top boy award, Daniel Hynes was second with a total of 14 points.
