TOURING clearly suits York RUFC’s Under-11s.

The young Clifton Parkers destroyed their opposition when taking in a weekend in Chester and North Wales.

Luke Howard, Alex Gould and Bradley Conterret were among the stars as York battered Chester 91-7 on the first day, and the second stanza produced a similar tale when they took part in the Mold Festival of Rugby.

They started slowly but soon got into the swing of things with some huge tackles put into the opposition by Alex Taylor, Jack Starkey and Dan Hardy.

Doug Whiter, Alex Pepper and Sam Caygill showed all their class with clever passing and running lines to keep the scoreboard ticking over. York beat teams from Bangor, Wrexham, Llandudno and Nant Conwy, but they saved their best for last.

Against Mold in the final, the boys thrashed their hosts 33-0 to take another top prize.

It wasn’t the same success story for York U14s, who lost 50-10 at a strong Darlington side.

They opened strongly with some excellent tackling by Harry Dixon. But they allowed their opponents too much time and space and were quickly 14-0 behind.

However, after some pressure play from York, Darlington attempted a clearance kick which was picked up by Dixon, who went on to run the ball over the line to score York’s first try, the conversion hitting the upright. An easy try was then scored by Darlington with a good 70-metre run but York hit back when their newest player Matt Williams ran on to a loose ball after a deft chip and went on to score his first try.

After three 20 minute sessions, the home team were delighted to see a final score of 50-10. With 25 players from York all having ample time on the field, the result didn’t reflect the effort displayed by a large, keen squad.

Commended players were Williams and Nick Stephen, with a well deserved man-of-the-match award going to Harry Hall.

Malton Fillies prevailed in a 49-41 shootout against Bridlington Girls.

Captain Rachel Lund caught the opening kick and ran straight back at the Seasiders to score the first try. Bridlington responded with a try but newcomer Lily Richardson made a crunching tackle, got the ball out to Rachel Lund, who again streaked past the Brid defence to cross.

Bridlington hit back again but, in an open game, Tatyana Heard picked up possession shortly after the restart and outran two defenders to score.

Lund elusively outran the defence again to pick up her hat-trick, converted by Ellie Raines and Hannah Sutcliffe got her first try for the Fillies from a classic offload from Heard after some strong driving from prop Jade Tait.

Brid’s star player Bianca Blackburn hit back with two further tries and a conversion to end the half 27-24 in Malton’s favour.

The second period gave new Fillies Amber Rushworth, Richardson, and Rachel Dring more of a chance to get stuck in and all displayed some good tackling, mauling and ball handling skills.

Ash McDowell gave a fine performance at hooker but Brid’s Blackburn started off the second half as she has ended the first, with two tries and a conversion.

Raines then jinked her way through the middle of Bridlington’s defence for her first try of the game.

But Malton were still on the back foot until Sutcliffe sped down the wing twice in succession.

Blackburn followed with another yet try but Lund had the last laugh – speeding in for her fourth try of the game to secure the victory.
