Last week was the coldest for a long time. I felt so sorry for the staff at Tesco’s with doors wide open and no heating, due to the building being refurbished.
The person I worried about most was the elderly gentleman – Dave Davison – who was selling poppies just inside the very draughty doors. I expressed my concern to him, and his reply was: “Don’t worry – I’ve got my thermals on.” If anyone deserves yet another medal to add to the ones on his jacket, he does, not thinking of himself, but of others who were badly injured or died for us many years ago.
