The number claiming employment-related benefits remains down on last year in York and North Yorkshire but numbers have increased slightly over the past month.

However, the Department of Work and Pensions in York reports great work from its work coaches, helping 10% more over 50s return to work in November compared with this month last year.

Reflecting on what she called a successful year, Wendy Mangan, Employer & Partnership Manager for York & North Yorkshire, said: “It’s been a busy, positive year at York jobcentre with everyone working hard to help jobseekers and employers.

“We’ve built new partnerships with businesses, some recruiting in our office, and a great example of this is with Marks & Spencer recently when we successfully helped them with their Christmas recruitment, with a quick turn-around.

“We’ve also increased the number of jobs fairs we’ve held this year, including our very popular speed-interviewing days, well-being support fairs and specialist events for our 50 Plus customers”.

Wendy added: “Looking to the new year we have vacancies in virtually every sector, whether that’s hospitality or health care. In January 2024 we will be working with Network Rail on their Never Mind the Gap opportunity to bring more women into the Rail sector. We’ll also be working with Premier Inn on the recruitment for their new hotel on Foss Islands in York and there will be the Acomb Jobs Fair on Wednesday January 24.”
