UP to 100 jobs could be axed at a York-based tax office as part of a national shake-up of the HM Revenue & Customs.

Proposals to close 95 HRMC offices across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, affecting up to 12,300 staff in the UK, were unveiled today.

They included plans to close Swinson House, in Piccadilly, York, as well as North Yorkshire HRMC offices in Quay Road, in Bridlington, Albion House, in Scarborough and Athelstan Court, in Ripon.

About 150 jobs in total will be lost in North Yorkshire, with 100 of those jobs going at the York office.

The Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union for York and North Yorkshire slammed the proposals.

PCS union rep for York and North Yorkshire Paul Tillyer said: "There may be room for a few people to be relocated to other tax offices in St Saviour's Place, York, but I doubt there will be many positions available and a lot of people are not in a position to relocate.

"The union is obviously concerned for the livelihood of the staff who now face a future of uncertainty.

"There are workers in places like Scarborough who have spent their lives working in the tax office. You have to consider those people like the single parents, those who are disabled and those families that are on a low income, who depend on their job.

"This news is devastating for them."
