YET another pub has closed its doors and is now on the market.

The licensees of the Yearsley Grove pub, in Huntington Road, have pulled their last pint behind the bar.

The Huntington pub is now up for lease with an asking price of £95,000.

With the smoking ban and the Government's increased taxes on booze it is another victim of the economic climate and the fines imposed by the pub's owner, Enterprise Inns, have not helped.

Licensee Peter Byrom had to find new work seven months ago and his partner Janice Fairburn has been running the bar since then.

She said the receivers were called in Wednesday and the business was bankrupt.

She said not enough money was being taken over the bar to pay owners Enterprise Inns the rent of nearly £1,200 a week and ever-increasing utility bills. Because the couple could not pay for the beer from Enterprise they were having to buy it wholesale.

Because of this they were in breach of their contract so Enterprise has been fining them.

In March it was £6,700, April £6,900 and May £4,900.

A spokeswoman for Enterprise said she could not comment on individual cases but said that chief executive Ted Tuppen had recently outlined various ways in which the company was helping struggling landlords including spending £2.5 million on rent concessions.

Coun Keith Hyman, who represents Huntington, said it was hoped new licensees could be found soon and the Yearsley Grove re-opened.

He said: "The hope is that it will be leased fairly shortly. It could be one of the signs of the demise of the traditional pub."

On the Enterprise website the pub is described as occupying a prominent site in Huntington Road.

It adds: "There is a good deal of recently developed housing in the immediate vicinity, complemented by well established residential areas, upon which this outlet can draw trade.

"Huntington Road is also a fairly well trafficked route into the city centre, as well as serving outlying areas including Huntington and Strensall, and therefore there are opportunities to attract passing trade."
