CLIFTON A' grabbed third place in men's one in the York & District Badminton League after winning their last two games of the season.

The club were 7-2 victors over Selby/Drax A' (away) and RI Tuesday/Thursday A' (home) to conclude their fixtures.

Steve Parr and Phil Brunyard took both Drax wins with some of their best badminton of the season.

The home win over Tuesday/ Thursday A' was marked by another excellent display by George Noble and Eric Wagenaars, who took three straight wins for a season's best score of 126-63.

Men's three champions University Staff Club were given a tough match by Fulfordgate before winning 5-4 at Burnholme Community College.

Andrew Johnson and Matt Hobman took three comfortable home wins for 129-83, but Hanif Ismal and Asri Awang sealed the Staff Club win with a 15-21, 21-15, 21-14 success against Mark Winfield and John Mavie.

Clifton A', placed third in mixed one, ended their season with an 8-1 home defeat by runners-up York RI B'.

Joyce Petch and Richard Pauw were the pick of the Institute pairs with three wins for a 143-97 scoreline.

Daniel Woolfson and Shelagh Barker spared the home whitewash with a 15 and 17 win over Alex Darlington and Sam Garoner.

Mixed five champions University Students C' disposed of bottom side Terry's 9-0 at the campus sports centre. James Barrett and Harriet Sudbury kept up their good form with another maximum win for a total of 126-45.

The highlight of the season was the resurgence of the University Students Club, who took the titles in men's division two and mixed division five, while also pushing York RI all the way in men's one before ending in second spot only five points behind.

RI continue to dominate the leagues, but there is evidence that their grip on the York league will receive a stiff examination next season.
