A STUNNING street production telling the story of York's most infamous son is at the heart of plans for the first Guy Fawkes festival.

The life of Fawkes, from his birth in the shadow of York Minster to his grisly death at Westminster, is set to be enacted in a series of Mystery Plays-style scenes in the heart of the city.

An acclaimed playwright and screenwriter has already agreed in principle to write and direct the production. With details being finalised and contracts yet to be signed, it is too early to reveal the writer's identity, but their involvement would be an international coup for York.

However, much more than a penny for the Guy is needed to ensure the ambitious plans come to fruition. Sponsors are now being sought for the November event, provisionally titled Guy Fawkes: A York Festival.

Gillian Cruddas, chief executive of Visit York, said: "This event is already shaping up to be a truly exciting addition to the city's calendar which would reap great cultural and economic rewards. All we need now are some imaginative people to get behind the vision.

"I can assure businesses that the plans now taking shape have the potential to win international interest and acclaim for York. Sponsors would enjoy widespread exposure.

"Anyone considering supporting the festival should get in touch as a matter of urgency and we can brief them further."

It is hoped the whole city can be involved in commemorating one of the most dramatic moments in the nation's history. As well as the street enactments, other plans under consideration include: A series of bonfires and fireworks displays around the city A light show based at one of York's landmark buildings, possibly Clifford's Tower An historic market with stallholders in costume.

Organisers want to hear from anyone who has ideas for the festival. A website will soon go live outlining what is being planned and asking residents to put forward their suggestions.

David Hattersley, of the York-based de Bretton Hospitality Group, said: "We're putting everything together from scratch, so we need all the help we can get.

"This year's Fawkes festival is about creating something special that we can build on for future years. It's time we finally marked the city's historic links with Guy Fawkes - but let's do it well, so it becomes a favourite part of the annual calendar."
