THOUSANDS of bike enthusiasts will be heading for York Racecourse next month for a cycling extravaganza.

The York Cycle Show began 64 years ago with 100 peddlers partaking in a post-war rally. This year, the event will be bigger than ever before and is set to attract 10,000 cyclists from across the UK.

The weekend will culminate in a grand parade of about 1,000 riders biking through the city centre after a cyclists' service in York Minster.

John Taylorson, secretary of the show committee, said: "The show will be a celebration of all that's best about cycling in Yorkshire. There will be something there for everyone, whether old or young."

The event will take place on June 21 and 22 and admission to the event is mostly free with an entry charge of £2.50 for the trade tents.

In the trade and exhibition marquees, the latest bikes, clothing and accessories will be on sale and display. Arena events will include championship racing, cycle polo, vintage bike displays and demonstrations.

Organised social rides will leave the racecourse on the Saturday morning with distances to suit all abilities.

Visitors can join the thrill and challenge of bidding for a bargain bike in the auction sale, or visit the saddlebag sale - a version of a car boot sale - for those elusive bike bits.

A series of young rider challenge events, plus local entertainers will be on hand for younger visitors.
