FOUR people have been arrested after yobs trashed flower tubs set up to support the York In Bloom campaign.

The incident occurred last Friday evening, and was caught on City of York Council CCTV cameras.

Terry Collins, the council's director of neighbourhood services, said: "We're all extremely disappointed that the hard work of so many people has been ruined by a small number of vandals. We will continue to work with partners across the city to make York an attractive place in which to live and work."

Coun Ann Reid, executive member for neighbourhood services, said: "I am really saddened by such mindless vandalism and cannot understand why people would want to spoil flower tubs that are there for all to enjoy."

The tubs had only been planted a few weeks ago, and were helping make the square look colourful and inviting for residents and visitors alike.

York is going head to head with Barnsley, Hull, Leeds and Wakefield in this year's Yorkshire In Bloom competition.
