SUNSHINE was expected at York Racecourse today for The Press Family Raceday.

About 10,000 people were predicted to roll up to the six-card meet, which offers free entry for all children aged under-16 accompanied by an adult.

Families enjoying the half-term break were being treated to an extravaganza of fun, including fairground rides, an Army assault course and a mechanical race horse.

There was also racing action galore, with an appearance from champion race jockey Ryan Moore.

James Brennan, marketing manager at the racecourse, said: "Excitement is mounting down at the racecourse and we're looking forward to welcoming lots of families and first-time race-goers.

"Racing is a very easy sport to understand. The start is here and the finish is there and the first horse back wins.

"Children can pick their horses to follow whether it's by a colour or a name, and with lots of cheering, it's something they can really get into.

"To see thoroughbred horses in the parade ring is a fairly magical experience - they are beautiful, graceful animals and it's quite a treat to see them close up."

Cyril The Squirrel and the racing terriers are also set to make a return during the afternoon and there will be other attractions to keep youngsters entertained.

Mr Brennan said: "If you fancy your chances as a budding jockey we have a mechanical race horse called The Equiciser for you to try your luck on.

"Or if you're more at home on a hobby horse, we've got some of those as well. If it's mental stimulation you want, there's a Minster FM gameshow to take part in, or if you want some physical exercise, there's an army assault course and bouncy castle.

"The sun is back out after the course had a little freshening up with rain earlier in the week and we're all looking forward to the excitement."

Among the race-goers will be more than 200 serving and retired soldiers from the Yorkshire Regiment, who will gather for the first running of the Yorkshire Regiment Maiden Stakes at 2.45pm.

All the fairground rides and attractions being set up for the Family Raceday will also be available during tomorrow's races.
