FUNDS raised in memory of a much-loved York family man who died in the Boxing Day tsunami have supplied another apprentice stonemason with the tools of her trade.

Genevieve Abranson, a trainee at York Minster Stoneyard, was the fourth grateful recipient of a £600 tool kit - funded by the Stephen Magson Memorial Trust.

She was presented with the gift by Stephen's widow, Denise Magson, who set up the trust along with friends and relatives in early 2005 to keep his memory alive.

The trust stopped active fundraising work after raising more than £25,000, although it will still fund various projects.

"We will continue to support apprentice stonemasons as long as we have the funds to do so. We still have a pot," said Denise.

She said Steve would have been "really delighted" to know trainees were being supported by the trust.

"The Minster was really dear to him. It is just so great to do something positive to help Minster Stoneyard and especially to help the young people as they start off."

She added: "I really miss the fundraising. I was ready for it to stop as I felt it was time to move on, but I miss it.

"If I was going back to Thailand I would always want to do some fundraising before I went. And we will definitely go back."

Steve died, aged 54, on Ko Phi Phi Island during the South East Asian tsunami on Boxing Day 2004, where the family was holidaying at the time.

The trust was launched to help people rebuild their lives in Ko Phi Phi while also encouraging his fields of interest in York.

He joined the Minster Stoneyard as an apprentice mason in the mid-1960s.

Denise said the trust had come to "a natural conclusion" after her sister, Gill Masterson, trust secretary, and chairman Tim Chapman, her partner, moved to the United States.

The trust also funds schooling for a brother and sister in Thailand, in partnership with the Sriphong Phukaoluan Foundation which supports families and children as they rebuild their lives.

The children, Sittipong and Roodimat, were orphaned by the tsunami on Phi Phi Island, and live with their grandmother in Krabi.

The trust is sponsoring their education until they reach 18.

Past fundraising events have included a barn dance, poetry evening, running a "potato stand" at the Dragon Boat Race as well as many sponsored events.

The Stephen Magson Memorial Trust website is remaining online at www.stephen-magsonmt.org and anyone wishing to donate funds can still do so via the site.
