Huby Primary School have become the first school to qualify for the Thirsk School Sports Partnership Tag Rugby League finals day after winning the Easingwold Cluster festival.

They can now look forward to the finals day at which the school who wins will represent the Hambleton District at the North Yorkshire Youth Games.

After qualifying from their group, by scoring one more try than Easingwold, Huby defeated last year's winners, Alne, in a pulsating final which was decided by a golden try.

Ten primary schools were involved in the festival, staged at Easingwold secondary school, namely Alne, Linton-on-Ouse, Husthwaite, Sheriff Hutton, Sutton-on-the-Forest, Huby, Easingwold, Stillington, Forest of Galtres and Crayke. All of the schools received coaching from York City Knights' community team.

Knights development manager Ian Wilson said: "The standard of play was excellent.

"Thanks go to all of the schools involved and to Chris Tiffany, School Sports Co-ordinator for the Easingwold Cluster, for helping to organise the event."

Alne topped Group A' with four wins from four, with Sutton-on-the-Forest finishing second with three wins and a narrow defeat against Alne.

Group B' was much closer with Huby and Easingwold winning two and drawing two matches each. Huby progressed to the final as a result of a superior points-difference.
