CHRISTMAS cards to be sent out by York's MP this year have been designed by an eight-year-old.

Hugh Bayley challenged primary school pupils in his constituency to design a Christmas card for him.

He received more than 100 entries, but Carr Junior School pupil Lucy Robinson's was picked out as the best by Caroline Worthington, the curator of art at York Art Gallery and staff members.

Lucy's design features a huge Christmas tree alongside the Minster, Micklegate Bar, the River Ouse and the Yorkshire Wheel.

It will be sent out to more than 800 people and organisations.

Mr Bayley said: "This is the first time I have run a competition for children to design my Christmas cards and I am really pleased that so many took part.

"It was great to see their work as it arrived in the office. All the children had worked hard and produced wonderful designs.

"I want to thank Caroline Worthington and the staff at the art gallery for judging the competition.

"I would have found it impossible to pick the winning design.

"I was hoping for a card that showed York at Christmas and Lucy's design does that.

"I am really looking forward to seeing the card going to print and signing them."
