K Jenkins (Taxing troubles, Readers' Letters, November 12) is right to point out the basic unfairness in the council tax system being property-related rather than income-based.

Under council tax, pensioners and those on low incomes pay a far higher proportion of their income than the very rich do.

Unfortunately, this is something that only politicians in Westminster can do anything about. And the record of the Westminster parties...?

The Conservatives introduced it and want to keep it. The Labour Government has had ten years to put forward proposals to replace council tax, but has instead chosen to prop it up.

Only the Liberal Democrats are committed to replacing the unfair council tax with a local income tax - a tax based on what people can pay and not on the house they live in.
