Further to the letter about City of York Council's pay to park by phone technology (Parking gimmick?, November 15), I would like to reassure readers that the scheme has been very successful.

Since the technology was first introduced in November 2005, more than 100,000 parking payments have been made in York using a mobile phone.

The council is offering 50p off the hourly rate of parking in city centre council car parks on Wednesday and Thursday to remind people that they can pay to park using their mobile phone if they wish.

The scheme does not cost the council anything to run and does not generate any additional income for the authority.

The aim is simply to offer motorists an alternative and more convenient way to pay to park.
