MORE signatures have been collected in Clifton, York, for a petition calling for the local post office to stay open.

The branch, in Clifton Green, is rumoured to be one of those earmarked for closure, following a review of the national post office network - although the Post Office has refused to reveal which branches are closing in the York area until the end of the month.

Local councillors have already said the post office must stay open and started a petition to save it.

On Saturday they were out on the streets again, asking more people to put pen to paper.

Coun Helen Douglas said: "I'm pleased with how many signatures are coming in every day for the petition. The level of support has really shown how people feel about the local post office and how determined they are to keep it as a local community resource."

The Labour councillors have been accused of opposing the Labour Government's own proposals, but Coun Ken King said the campaign showed "local ward councillors with integrity working hard on behalf of their constituents".

He added: "The response has really shown a level of community spirit not always obvious, and I am pleased about that."
