YORK Acorn U16s gave their best display of the season but it wasn't quite enough to topple premier division big-guns Skirlaugh in their Yorkshire Cup tie.

Acorn took the game to Skirlaugh and a Chilton penalty gave them a deserved lead. Skirlaugh were stung into action and, despite big tackling stints from Tom Carlos, Jefferson, Stuart Leeke and Hyde, scored out wide to take the advantage into the interval.

Acorn refused to give in and, with Josh Peacock, Mortimer, Leeke and Rush-worth showing well, hung in there. Skirlaugh continued to work hard and further tries made it 24-2 but Acorn got stuck in even more.

The much-improved Carlos made three long-range breaks to set up positions from which the impressive Peacock and man of the match Leeke scored. Chilton goaled both and Skirlaugh were rattled at 24-14 with five minutes to go, but, despite further Acorn pressure the score remained unchanged.
