PEDESTRIANS in Fulford have been handed a safety boost, after a new crossing island was installed in Main Street.
Local councillor Keith Aspden said: "After a long campaign with local residents I am delighted that we have a refuge on Main Street.
"Having led the campaign locally, including presenting a petition and speaking at council meetings, I am sure that this will greatly aid pedestrians in crossing the busy road, particularly the elderly and for those reaching the local shops."
His Liberal Democrat colleague Madeleine Kirk, the party's prospective parliamentary candidate for York Outer, said: "I was very pleased to support the campaign in Fulford to secure a pedestrian refuge. Having spoken to residents in the nearby sheltered accommodation I can see why it is much needed for the local community."
The current pedestrian refuge will be replaced in about 18 months with a permanent solar-powered one.
