A TEENAGE girl told today how she feared being beaten up after two men climbed on her school bus and one of them started attacking pupils.

The incident happened when the bus was taking students back to Brayton College from Selby College, where they had been attending a vocational course.

The girl's mother said that two men pulled their van in front of the bus in Brayton Lane and then ignored attempts by the driver to stop them climbing on board.

The teenager claimed that one of her friends suffered a black eye, another was hit round the head and that a third sustained a lump to the head after being hit by one of the men.

"Everyone was really terrified when they were on the bus," she said.

"I was afraid I was going to get beaten up." She said she did not know why the men had come on board or why the attack had happened.

Police today said they had received a report that two men had boarded the bus and assaulted three male "youths" - but said the injuries were likely to have been minor. Officers said the pair also used abusive and insulting language towards the pupils.

The girl's mother called for Brayton College to put a member of staff on the bus to help ensure the pupils were protected in future.

John Kesterton, head teacher at Brayton College, said it was supporting the police fully in its investigation.

He said: "I wouldn't want to comment on the details of the alleged assault because they are what we've asked the police to deal with," he said.

"It would have been very frightening for the youngsters on the bus and the driver did what he could.

"It's outrageous that anyone would think it was reasonable behaviour to get on a bus and do something like that."

A spokesman for Selby College said it understood an incident took place in Brayton Lane, on a bus transporting Brayton College pupils back to that college from Selby College.

"We understand the incident is part of an ongoing police investigation," he said.

"We would ask anyone witnessing the incident to contact PC Jo Wilkinson, on 0845 60 60 247."

A spokesman for the bus company concerned was unavailable for comment.
