I am totally disgusted as to how the ECB and Joe Root have handled the Ben Stokes situation. The ECB should not have allowed him to be considered for Test Match selection until after the disciplinary investigation and Joe Root the captain should not have picked him for the third Test at the expense of Sam Curran who appears to be a young player with a bright future. Could it be a coincidence that the controversy is at Trent Bridge, the home ground of one of England and the world’s true legends and greatest all time fast bowlers, Harold Larwood? Harold, who did nothing wrong on or off the field, never played for England after the infamous bodyline tour.

Yet he only did what his captain Douglas Jardine, the architect of bodyline, asked of him. Jardine went on to play Test cricket after that tour, Harold never played again.

On selecting my all-time greatest England test team neither Douglas Jardine, Joe Root or Ben Stokes would be included. My team would be J Hobbs, L Hutton, P May, W Hammond, D Compton, I Botham, A Knott, H Verity, S Barnes, F Trueman, H Larwood, 12th man B Close.
