A LOCAL shop that is pushing to reduce single-use plastics played host to the Lord Mayor.

Owl & Monkey, on Heslington Road, welcomed incumbent Lord Mayor Keith Orrell, who is keen to highlight the issue throught his term in office.

Joining him were the Lady Mayoress, Judith Orrell, and Sheriff of York, Verna Campbell.

Shop owner, Helen Harris, said: “We select all the products we have based on the ethics behind them.

“It is important to us that they do as much good as possible, so factors such as suppliers and manufacturers being able to give details about their ethical and ecological footprints are key to our selection.”

Items stocked include wooden brushes, made with natural bristles, rice straw brooms, luxury razors, fountain pens and ethically traded ostrich feather dusters, which are a by-product of the meat trade.
