THE Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster Melle Mel & The Furious Five are playing Fibbers in York tonight.

Yes, that's right, the hip hop masters are definitely in town, so please ignore the Fibbers website message that reads: "Summer break. We are off for the summer. We're tidying up our back end. Sat 1st September 2018."

"Arguably the founders of recorded hip hop music with the instantly recognisable and multi million-selling rhapsodies that established rap as a commercial force – Rapper’s Delight and Apache – The Sugarhill Gang are bringing the classics back for an anniversary tour!" says Fibbers supremo Tim Hornsby.

"Rapper's Delight was the first ever rap song to hit the Top 40 charts in 1979 and they're still touring with two of the original members of this historic group, Wonder Mike (Michael Wright) and Master Gee (Guy O’Brien).

"This is a special tour with Rock & Roll and Grammy Hall Of Famers’ Grandmaster Melle & The Furious Five, with Scorpio, who are widely regarded as being among the most influential hip hop acts, playing their masterpieces The Message, White Lines and Freedom."

Looking forward to hearing the hip-hop history makers rapping in York, Hornsby concludes: "This is where rap music began. Respect!"

Doors open at 7.30pm for this 8pm show; tickets are on sale at £21 at fibbers.co.uk.

Jonathan Wilcox will review tonight's concert for The Press.
