A JEWISH woman from Northern Iraq who was granted leave to remain in the UK after a successful campaign is planning a cookery demonstration in York as a way of thanking people for their support.

Dena Sarhang came to York from Northern Iraq in 2013, together with her husband Sinan, who was a student at the university, said Ben Rich, of York Liberal Jewish Community,

After he graduated, they and their two children, Yara and Lisa, were finally granted leave to remain, following a major campaign by the Jewish community and others.

Ben said Dena had become renowned for her 'amazing contributions' to the community's bring-and-share lunches, which included pastries, falafels, humus and far more elaborate Middle Eastern fayre.

"As a 'thank you' to the community and all those that helped her family secure their home in the UK, Dena will be hosting a cookery demonstration – Cooking with Joy – from 2-4pm on Sunday at the Gateway Centre in Front St, Acomb," he said.

"The demonstration is open to those of all faiths and of none. Those that can afford it are invited to make a small donation (£5 for adults; £2.50 for concessions) with all contributions going to Warchild, a registered charity which supports lone child refugees."
