Mrs Edward Shaw, of Burn Hall, Easingwold, had opened the garden fete at Settrington Rectory in aid of providing funds for the village hall. Speaking at the fete she said, she had been interested in village halls since the end of the Great War. Men came home from the war back to their country homes, but could not find any form of recreation, and it was then that she became a worker to provide these halls. Because of the lack of entertainment in the country, continued Mrs Shaw, young people were drifting into the towns, and as a result there was a shortage of agricultural workers. And this year, the salmon season in Filey had been the worst since before the war, with many of the men not being able to afford to pay for their salmon nets. But that was not the case for Mr J Johnson, who had landed himself a 22lb salmon while fishing in Filey Bay.

Independent television programmes in various areas has been interrupted by black-outs as technicians continued their industrial action. In London, the first show on London Weekend Television was faded out, but programmes were normal afterwards. There was a 25-minute fade-out on Scottish Television, which delayed a David Frost programme and Tyne-Tees, Anglia and Yorkshire television also had stoppages. The dispute, which started last week, arose over the claim by members of the Association of Cinematograph, Television and Allied Technicians’ for a seven per cent pay increase, a 35-hour instead of a 40-hour working work, and four weeks’ holiday a year. And Levitation brought off a great win in the Sutton Stakes at Thirsk Races and two hours later escaped injury in a road crash not far from the course.
