I WAS fascinated to read of the historic plaque unveiling at Holy Trinity Church for the communion of a same sex couple, Anne Lister and Ann Walker (“York backdrop for TV filming”, July 24).
Are readers aware of a very touching gravestone lying prone outside the door of Osbaldwick church?
It reads: “Here lieth the body of Richard Wright who lived as partner with William Hutchinson, Gentleman, of the City of York in great Union for 35 years. Remarkable for justice and fidelity, died April 5th AD 1742 aged 66 years. Here also lieth the body of William Hutchinson Esq who departed this life January 5th 1772 aged 89.”
Surely this indicates that Georgian society was more enlightened than we may previously have thought.
