THE front page of The Press (“Tunnel may be made single lane”, July 23) brought swift responses from several letter writers.

So I read The Press report again and noted the following:

l A key route into York is later described by project manager Tasmin Hart-Jones as a rat run

l A two-way cycle lane is envisaged as part of sustainable transport for residents. As there is a cycle lane already no benefit would be achieved. Fixing the rough ride on Leeman Road would encourage more cyclists. I know, I use it often

l More pedestrians are going to use the tunnel it would appear. Where are they going to go?

l Intelligent traffic lights: I am sorry but they have not been invented yet

l During the consultation process the closing of the tunnel had been suggested as the preferred option. I think not, my recollection was the opposite.

l During the railway museum opening hours of 10am to 5pm, for pedestrians they would have footways, play streets, snickelways and foot streets. Pie in the sky.

So we have the council development department working against the council pollution department working against the council transport department etc with no joined-up thinking.

I spoke to Tasmin Hart-Jones at one of the consultations. She told me she lived in Leeds and travelled to York every day. Perhaps she should come out of her office and stroll around the city and understand how it functions.

I hope cyclists play by rules in tunnel

WITH reference to the plan for the Marble Arch tunnel (“Tunnel may be made single lane”, July 23): if it does happen I just hope that all cyclists obey the ruling, keep to the cycle lane and don’t use the pedestrian path.

A small percentage of them think they can ride anywhere they like with impunity.

The Ministry of Silly Ideas at work again

I THINK there is an element of Monty Python at City of York Council: the Ministry of Silly Walks comes to mind, though in this case it is the Ministry of Silly Ideas, with the latest of a long line of these being the proposed traffic lights and one-way system at Marble Arch, a congestion nightmare ready to happen.

When will they ever learn?

Lane closure would add to the pollution

SO now they are going to make the Leeman Road tunnel one way with traffic lights (“Tunnel may be made single lane”, July 23).

It works fine as it is with no hold-ups and there is a dedicated pedestrian tunnel already so the secondary footpath next to the road could be a bike lane.

The council complain about pollution but all they do is create it by stopping traffic instead of keeping it moving.

I totally agree with opening up the proposed new road near the hospital to allow traffic access to Huntington Road.
