A CLUSTER of thunderstorms is heading towards York.

Radar shows that the storms have developed over the last couple of hours in the East Midlands and are moving in a north-easterly direction.

By 4.45pm, there had been lightning in Goole, Market Weighton, Pocklington and Elvington, near York, with torrential rain in places, and by 5.10pm, more  were developing to the south of York and heading for the city.

Forecasters have already warned that York's heatwave looks set to come to an end with thunder and torrential rain which could cause flash-flooding.

The Met Office said there was a chance of thundery showers this afternoon and this evening in York and North Yorkshire, after temperatures soar to 28 or 29C - making it one of the hottest days so far in York - amid high humidity.

But the greatest risk of flooding will come tomorrow afternoon and evening, with another very warm and humid day followed by more frequent and intense thunderstorms later, giving torrential downpours and hail.

The forecasters' yellow warning says flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with the potential for damage from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds

Train and bus services could be affected and power cuts could happen.

The weekend will be much cooler and fresher.
