The brewery: Little Black Dog.

Where is it?: In the grounds of Carlton Towers, just north of the M62 near Snaith.

The story: Nigel Kot had been a keen home brewer in the 1980s, and revived his enthusiasm in 2010. This time, the former light and sound engineer turned it into a business, and the whole family got involved. His wife Christine, a former nursery manager, daughter Emily, a nursery nurse, and son Jordan, who had been in the Navy, all came to work for the brewery instead.

The beers: The core cask range consists of an IPA, a Yorkshire Bitter, an Oatmeal Stout, an American Pale Ale and a New World Pale Ale. Limited edition beers tend to be produced in bottle. The casks are distributed very locally at the moment, including to The Odddfellows Arms in Carlton and The Black Dog in Camblesforth, but business is growing and more outlets are likely.

Can I visit?: Yes, there’s an open door policy. They’re open from 10am to 4pm on Monday to Saturday and noon to 3pm on Sunday.

What else is new?: The brewery is to open a beer cafe near Selby Abbey later this summer, providing another permanent outlet for the beers.
