AN UNIDENTIFIED tropical plant is taking over a back garden in York.

Olive Stevenson, of Field View, off Burton Stone Lane, is putting out an appeal to Press readers who might know what the mystery plant is.

She was given some bulbs ten years ago by a man who helped her tidy up the garden in her new home, but unfortunately, she can't remember his name.

Olive said: "It's 15ft high, with a long stalk and a beautiful white bloom at the top, but the leaves are long and hard and spiky.

"I have to tie them back from the path, otherwise you get stabbed!"

The plant has grown steadily over the past ten years and currently has new shoots appearing at the bottom. It last flowered two years ago.

Olive said: "It's bigger than my shed. I don't know what it is, but I've love to know."
