A YORK community centre is finally ready to rise phoenix-like from the ashes of an old school.

Almost four years ago, Burnholme Community College marked its closure with a concert featuring present and past pupils.

It was organised by Tang Hall SMART, the social enterprise set up by Sue Williamson, a former teacher on the site.

So it is only fitting that the CIC (Community Interest Company) celebrates its move to the revamped building with a free summer concert on Saturday, July 7.

Founder and CEO Sue said: “This is a hugely symbolic event where we are using music yet again to announce the importance of key events for the community.

“It was a huge blow for the area when the school closed, but something brilliant has come out of the ashes.”r

Since its inception, Tang Hall SMART has developed its work using music, media and technology to engage, build confidence and raise self-esteem and wellbeing.

For the past four years, the team have put up with leaky roofs and dodgy plumbing, and are now delighted with their bespoke electronics workshop and recording studio.

Sue said: “Saturday is significant because this is our chance to say thank you to the community, first for joining the fight to keep the school open, then for being supportive and welcoming to us.

“This is a free gig, with a lovely free tea sponsored by Sewells, who built the centre, and it will be a great show, featuring our community-music acts, inclusive acts and bands from our own Musication record label.”

The concert takes place this Saturday from 3pm to 8pm.
