NINE friends will set off today on a cycling challenge in memory of a close friend.

City of York councillor John Gates said the group will be fundraising for charity Dementia Fowards in honour of Stu Fairclough, who died last year.

Cllr Gates said the cyclists will visit some of their friend's favourite places as part of the challenge and added: “All of us taking part have known Stu for more than 50 years.

"Dementia had a devastating effect on him, stealing away from his family and friends a caring, honest, humorous and always positive man. Stu was very well known in local football circles having managed a number of successful Saturday and Sunday teams including Dunnington and Magpie."

The ride will finish at the Black Horse in Monkgate at about 4pm on Monday, which would have been Stu's 64th birthday. To donate visit uk.virginmoneygiving.com/SomeoneSpecial/StuFairclough.
