CHILDREN'S charity The Island is to play host to a music event at the Shambles Market, York, every Sunday throughout June.

Celebrating talent from across Yorkshire, the four days of music will raise funds in aid of vulnerable children and young people in York who struggle with their mental, emotional and social wellbeing.

"The charity supports the children by providing them with a range of mentoring services," says Ellen Cole, from The Island. "It’s great to see how many musicians and bands have got in touch to support our worthy cause. The acts performing are so different from one another, meaning that there's something for everyone to enjoy.

"The music will take place in the market's food court area and will certainty add something extra special there. The four events have free entry and are family friendly and everyone is welcome to join us for what's going to be a memorable music experience. Any donations, however big or small, would be hugely appreciated."

Ellen thanked Access To Music for their "huge support". "Many of their students are involved and they have been so kind to lend us an amp, which we are eternally grateful for," she says.

Acts performing for The Island include Viking-style folk band Bruni; acoustic musician Laura Kindelan; established performers Ava Rose & Charlie Daykin; Harry Hutchinson; Bethany Bethford; Aysha Ouarirou; Red Sky and Frankie. Taking part too are Rachel Makena; Melissa Jaynes; Molly Teasdale; John James Bruce; Casee Wilson; Molly Thompson Cobalt Tales; Michael Graham and Maggie Wakeling.

Look out too for mesmerising North York Moors singer-songwriter Amy May Ellis, up-and-coming acoustic musician Scarlett Gordon and upbeat, fun pop group Lucy’s Pop Choir. "Closing the event will be the Ukulele Sunshine Revival, who are guaranteed to get those feet stomping and maybe even some dancing," says Ellen.

The gigs will take place on June 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 11am to 4pm. To find out who is performing when, visit theislandyork.ord/music-at-the-shambles-market.
