IT is full steam ahead at the site of the new York community stadium as the steel structures of the leisure centre and cinema also begin to take shape.

The Monks Cross site is progressing, with two massive steel frames in place for the buildings and work has begun on the west stand.

The official Twitter account for the Buckingham Group Contracting site team - which is currently working on the York Community Stadium Project - said the concrete works are starting on the east stand. These are set to become the lower terrace seating, dug outs and tunnel that will provide the access for both fans and the players.

Councillor Nigel Ayre, executive member for leisure, culture and tourism said: “The progress being made on site is exciting to see and with the building of the west stand starting and foundations for the east stand in place there is much more to come.

“The leisure centre continues to develop at pace, you can start to see where the sports hall, gym and swimming areas will be so it is very exciting. It’s full steam ahead on site as we look ahead to opening next year.”

The latest video of the construction site says there has been “fantastic progress” on the building and shows steel arriving for work on the east stand.

The inner structure of the leisure centre is also taking shape as the construction team make the most of the good weather.

Once complete, the new site will include an 8,000 seat community sports stadium for professional football and rugby league games.

The leisure facilities will also include a swimming pool, gym, dance studio, indoor and outdoor climbing facilities and a sports hall with spectator seating. Among the commercial development on the site will be a cinema complex with IMAX screen, five restaurants and a number of retail units.

York City have also announced they are looking for volunteers to join a Stadium Working Group as the club plan for relocation.

With the club currently preparing for its last-ever season at Bootham Crescent, supporters are being sought to contribute to key discussions over the next 12 months. Email bc@yorkcityfootballclub.co.uk by 5pm on June 30 to apply for a place.
