A SUPPER club in aid of Syria has been held by Nations of York Collective (NYC) - and more foodie events are planned to mark Refugee Week next month.

The collective is a York initiative which aims to celebrate diversity in the local community, with members 'convinced there is more that brings us together than pulls us apart.'

Turkish chef Gulsum Kilic provided a four-course menu for the supper club, held at the Flax and Twine cafe in Shambles, which raised £355 for the London-based charity Hands Up Foundation.

Beverley Hadfiled, of NYC, said: “It is inspiring to see how a purely social initiative focusing on disadvantaged people abroad can resonate not only with individuals but with local business."

NYC is set to host three more foodie events in late June and early July to showcase York's diverse culture through food and show its support for Refugee Week, including master classes and tasting sessions in Armenian-Argentinian and Mexican cuisine, and another supper club at the Flax and Twine.
