SIXTY new houses in a Selby district village look likely to be blocked by planners next week.

On Wednesday Selby District Council’s planning committee is due to consider an outline application for new houses off School Road, Hemingbrough, but planners have asked councillors to turn down the scheme.

The proposals would see around 60 new houses built on land around an existing house - Plinthstone.

However, a planning document shows that ten objection letters have been sent to the council, citing fears over access, the impact new homes would have on existing services in the village, congestion and the impact on the neighbours, among other things.

In their written report to the committee, Selby’s planning officers have recommended the scheme be turned down.

They say the new homes would fall outside Hemingbrough’s defined development limits, and would be predominantly in open countryside.

The proposals are considered to have “a detrimental impact on the openness of the countryside and adversely affect the landscape character and setting of Hemingbrough”, the report adds.

At the same meeting, councillors are being urged to accept fewer affordable houses on a new development in Cawood.

Daniel Gath Homes already has permission for 17 new houses off Castle Close in Cawood, and wants to vary an agreement which made 40 per cent of those homes affordable housing.

A written report shows the company asked to cut out affordable housing altogether, saying it would make the site unviable to build on.

Now the company has come to a new agreement with council planners, and is proposing four affordable homes - 23.5 per cent of the site.

Planning committee members are being urged to accept that deal when they meet on Wednesday.
