A FILM has been produced to celebrate Yorkshire's rivers and World Fish Migration Day, which is tomorrow (April 21).

The Environment Agency working with its partners have published the film - 'Our Rivers: Recovery and Renewal', which includes beautiful scenery of valleys and rivers across Yorkshire, including the Ouse, Aire, Don, Swale, and Wharfe.

The film features representatives from the Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water, Rivers Trusts, and local school children discussing the improvements made to river water quality in recent years and the return of migratory fish such as salmon, lamprey and eel and coarse fish such as barbel, chub and dace.

Mark Scott, Yorkshire Area Director for the Environment Agency, said: “Over the two decades the Environment Agency has been established we have worked tirelessly to improve the water quality in our rivers and bring back the native fish who inhabited the rivers of Yorkshire centuries ago prior to the pollution sustained from the industrial revolution, when the main purpose of the rivers was seen as being to help the county’s burgeoning industry.

“In recent years our work has started to come to fruition and pay dividends with vast improvements being made to Yorkshire’s rivers. Fish are coming back to our rivers in large numbers."
