THE jury in the trial of a man accused of raping two underage girls cleared him on nine charges.

But jurors were unable to agree verdicts on two more charges and were discharged after nearly seven hours in retirement at York Crown Court.

David John Stansfield, 42, formerly of Stirrup Close, Foxwood, denied all 11 charges against him.

He was acquitted after the jury had been in retirement for six hours on seven charges against the younger girl.

They were two charges of indecent assault and five of rape.

At the same time, he was acquitted of a serious sexual assault and one charge of rape against the older girl.

The prosecution was given time to decide whether it will seek a retrial on two charges of rape against the older of the two girls on which the jury did not return verdicts.
