JAZZ saxophonist Tori Freestone and pianist Alcyona Mick are on tour promotiong their debut album, Criss Cross. Tomorrow, they play The Crescent in York in a set focused on global influences and improvisation.

The 7.30pm concert coincides with that day's release of the album on the transatlantic label Whirlwind Recordings.

Freestone, who also plays flute and violin, and Mick will follow up the gig with a Saturday workshop from 1pm to 3pm. Aimed at young students, it will explore improvisational themes and techniques. For more information, please email harkiritboparai@gmail.com.

Originally playing Thelonious Monk tunes together in the Canary Islands, Tori and Alcyona were given their first platform as a duo at Manchester Jazz Festival in 2015.

Having worked together in larger ensembles such as the London Jazz Orchestra, they found the two-piece setting gave them space to experiment with their spontaneous and interactive approaches to playing.

They duly recorded Criss Cross at the Artesuono studio in Italy and are promoting the record on an Arts Council-funded tour.

Freestone features in some of Britain's most exciting ensembles, such as  the UK Allstar Big Band with Hermeto Pascoal, the Julian Siegel Jazz Orchestra and the Andre Canniere Sextet, as well as leading her own  trio with Dave Mannington and Tim Giles.

She was shortlisted for the Arts Foundation Award 2017  and recieved a trio commission for the EFG London Jazz Festival at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Alcyona is an established London player who has worked with an array of artists in Britain and abroad. She is a member of the London Jazz Orchestra, has played for many years internationally with Arabic artist Natacha Atlas and has performed in Istanbul with many Turkish musicians. As a composer, she studied at the National Film and Television School.

Tickets for tomorrow night cost £10 from Earworm Records, in Goodramgate, or at seetickets.com or £12 on the door.
