THE family of York schoolgirl Katie Rough have been busy planting bluebells at a local wood in her memory.

Seven year-old Katie was killed by a teenager on January 9 last year on a footpath in Woodthorpe, York.

Alison Rough, Katie's mum, said her daughter loved Acomb Wood, a place where Katie would walk her dog, spot squirrels and play in the mud.

This weekend her family visited the wood to plant 2,000 English bluebells into the ground, with help from Friends of Acomb Wood, and deputy leader of City of York Council, Cllr Andrew Waller.

Alison said: "It is going to look amazing when the bluebells are all out. I can't wait to come back in a couple of months and see."

She added that the bluebells should flower year after year and that the family may add to them and plant some snowdrops as well.

"Katie loved snowdrops and bluebells," she commented.

Alison also said the wood is a place where the family can have a quiet walk and think about Katie.
