ONE of the city’s largest primary schools is celebrating after retaining its good Ofsted rating.

Westfield Primary School in Acomb was given the second highest rating by inspectors who visited in January, after being ranked as good in 2013.

The report said pupils “flourish”.

Inspectors praised progress at the school since they last visited, saying the number of children reaching a good level of development has grown year on year and is now in line with the national average.

The report said: “The leadership team has brought about steady and sustained improvement in the school since the last inspection. Your professional commitment to the community and its children has made a positive contribution to the life chances of many. You have seen pupils flourish from the time they enter school to the time they leave.

“You recognise the potential in staff, giving them leadership responsibility and the opportunity to grow.”

However, they said despite staff’s best efforts, too many parents still take their children out of school for unauthorised term-time holidays.

Head teacher Tracey Ralph said: “We are really proud that we have managed to sustain our good Ofsted judgement since the last inspection in 2013, and that our pupil progress scores and pupil premium results continue to be amongst the highest in the city of York.

“Thank you to all our staff and children for all their hard work, to parents and governors and to the local community in Westfield Ward.

“On a personal level I have always sought to develop leadership skills within the staff team and many Westfield staff have moved on for promotion, including to headships, in York and beyond.”
