RAIL passengers can get free high speed wi-fi at York Station as an internet firm continues its roll out of ultra fibre optic in the city.

TalkTalk says its new service offers speeds of up to 1Gb per second and is 20 times faster than the average fibre connection.

The company is currently installing an ultra fibre optic network with the aim of reaching 50,000 homes and businesses across York in the next two years.

Charles Dunstone, executive chairman of TalkTalk Group, said: “York is the first city in the UK where we are building a ‘full fibre’ network and we wanted people to be able to really experience the difference of a ‘gigabit connection’ for themselves.

"We are thrilled to be opening this fantastic new centre at York Station and we hope visitors will connect and make the most of the speeds.

"People will be able to stream HD TV, download and upload videos, music, photos and apps in seconds while waiting for their onward journeys.”

So far, the company has installed an ultra fibre optic network for Rawcliffe, Clifton, Huntington, New Earswick and parts of The Groves and in October started work to extend it to Dringhouses and Woodthorpe.
