A COUNCIL-owned flat block is in line for a £1 million investment as the authority plans an extension and overhaul.

Lincoln Court in Acomb could be getting a renovation - to create seven new dementia friendly apartments while converting four existing bedsits into one bedroomed flats.

Next month senior councillors will be asked to approve the project. Council documents say staff have already spoken to people who live at Lincoln Court about the plans, and will be speaking to tenants and neighbours more before a planning application is made.

At the same time, the council staff behind a major overhaul of older people's housing in the city want to make the block a "sheltered housing plus" complex where people can live independently but with care and support nearby.

As well as new and renovated flats, the £1 million work should fund a new and improved entrance lobby, communal facilities including a community lounge, assisted bathing facilities, a hairdressing and therapy room, a buggy store, offices for care and other staff, gardens and improved car parking.

Lincoln Court neighbours Windsor House, the city council owned care home earmarked for closure last year.

Earlier this month city councillors approved a bid to create a Disabled Children's Centre of Excellence on that site, and on part of the playing fields for nearby Hob Moor Oaks school.

A dozen dementia friendly apartments - thought to be the first in the city - were completed at Glen Lodge on Sixth Avenue in November.

The designs are kept deliberately light and airy, to make the flats easy to get around even at night, and have features like brightly coloured tiling in the bathrooms and kitchens to make it easier to see power sockets.
